Havana, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) Belarussian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Makei, denounced the double standards being applied today by the United States in cases such as that of the Cuban Five, held prisoner in the USA for fighting terrorism.
“In those cases, we can talk not only of double, but rather triple standards, as it is remarkable that the same phenomena which occur in Belarus, Cuba, and other nations, are interpreted so differently by the United States.”
“We have observed in amazement the case of the five Cubans held prisoners in the United States, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez, where the application of double standards is clear, and logic demands that we should fight those double standards,” he said.
Rene and Fernando, who along with their three other companions, were condemned for impeding terrorist actions against Cuba and the United States, have returned to Cuba after completing their respective prison sentences. Makei said that in eastern Ukrainian regions, where the population has taken up arms against the government, the United States describes those people as terrorists, Makei told Prensa Latina.
Friendly states should also join together and oppose attempts by major powers to manage international bodies at their convenience,” stated the Belarussian diplomat, who met yesterday with his Cuban peer Bruno Rodriguez.
“We spoke with the minister of foreign affairs about doing everything possible in the framework of international organizations, to reflect our national interests in new sustainable development policy through 2015,” he added.
